Burnside Cemetery History

Burnside Cemetery had its beginnings with the first meeting being held in the Burnside School on January 20, 1890 with representatives from the Burnside families of Beck, Bell, Crealock, Ferris(s), Jardine, Lee, McIntosh, McKenzie, Smith, Troop and Voss.

At that time the Ferris(s) family donated 4 acres which was later determined that the site was too low for burials, so in 1896 the McKenzie family donated the land of the present location along the #1 Highway just east of #16 Highway.  Bagot and Edwin Districts were included and 69 families became the original plot owners.

Residents of the area and those who have moved away, are still choosing to be buried in this cemetery.  Over 84 surnames can be found in the Burnside Cemetery along with a Cairn to commemorate the former churches of the area.
